It’s guest speaker time! Thanks to Aaron, the Chair of the San Diego County Democratic Party, Jess Durfee, will visit us on Thursday. We will ask Jess to explain why and how California’s electoral districts have been redrawn, and the consequences for San Diego. Aaron and I also contacted the San Diego Republican Party to get it to send a representative, but we have yet to hear a response.
As you probably know, a recent ballot proposition passed by the state’s voters set up an independent, partisanly-balanced commission to redraw California’s election districts – both federal (House) and state (Senate, Assembly, Board of Equalization). This means our districts have changed shape. Some of us are not in the districts we used to be in. For example, I am now in a different Congressional district.
The reshaped districts can be expected to shake up some of our elections. We can learn the details from Jess on Thursday. But, here is some information if you want to learn the basics beforehand.
- SacBee article explaining how the redistricting was done and announcing the new districts’ creation.
- How each of San Diego’s U.S. House districts is affected.
- In a separate process, San Diego’s city council districts have been redrawn and a new district created. 2-minute video explanation. Article.
More I’ll leave to the pro, Jess Durfee. Also, Aaron will be prepping on this issue as a backup.
See you there. Also, LET’S REMEMBER THAT THE LARGER A GROUP WE ARE, THE SMALLER AMOUNT OF TROUBLE FOR THE STAFF WE WANT TO BE.
