Since we’re talking about tax levels next week, I thought I’d start posting stuff on the deal reached yesterday. My criterion for linking is that the article must be different from what anybody can read on their favorite political pundit/media website.
- Did Obama Lose The Tax Cut Battle But Win The War? From The Economist.
- Roundup of opinions by various economists and commentators of the right and left.
- A hidden poison pill? From Reuters.
See, if you just watch cable news, you never learn much.
Fred: Tomoroow I’ll post some tax policy-oriented websites where you can research tax levels and who pays what, for the 12/16 mtg. They are very easily searchable and tend to have simple graphics for media types, so it will be easy to look up most any figure you want. I’ll do a “This Week’s Mtg” post next Monday weith some numbers/perspective I already have.
UPDATE: Who got more in the tax deal, liberals or conservatives? The answer:
2. In three sentences, from the NYT:
Mr. Obama effectively traded tax cuts for the affluent, which Republicans were demanding, for a second stimulus bill that seemed improbable a few weeks ago. Mr. Obama yielded to Republicans on extending the high-end Bush tax cuts and on cutting the estate tax below its scheduled level. In exchange, Republicans agreed to extend unemployment benefits, cut payroll taxes and business taxes, and extend a grab bag of tax credits for college tuition and other items.
