Yeah! A religion topic! And an important one. One-quarter of Americans are Catholic, about the same proportion as 30 years ago. But, the Church has been losing native-born Americans hand over fist. The gap has largely been filled by immigrants, one-half of whom are Catholic.
This means that American Catholicism is being pulled in two directions: It’s liberalizing as many adherents are distancing themselves from Vatican doctrine — and authority. But, the Church also is being pushed in a conservative direction due to the personal (not political) views of most immigrants. So, how “Catholic” are American Catholics?
Gary will present. Here is some info on U.S. Catholics and Catholicism, plus a NYT article on the latest Vatican scandals.
